How to play Rows to Riches
A short guide to the first hours of the data engineering idle game, and the answers to what people ask most.
The loop
Press INSERT to add rows by hand. Fast presses build a combo, up to +100%. Spend rows on Data Sources, which produce rows on their own, from the Spreadsheet Intern to Everything Is Data (26 in all). Each source stands on the pipeline and ships packets to storage.
Upgrades and schema
Upgrades (about 330) double a source, link neighbouring sources through synergies, or strengthen INSERT. The Schema tab sells columns that multiply everything, at a steep price. Alien data types such as QUBIT, VIBE and NULLER_THAN_NULL make them stronger later.
Corporate life
Quarterly OKRs are graded at an all-hands. Stakeholder requests and meetings arrive as two-choice cards. Phishing tests are passed by not clicking. Incidents such as PagerDuty alerts, backfills, viral dashboards, wormholes and abductions appear on screen: click them for a reward. An inbox of about 50 emails and news items comes from parody vendors.
Prestige and challenges
When growth slows, reset a layer for a permanent currency. There are four layers, each resetting everything below it. Currencies come from a root of the rows earned and their bonuses are soft-capped, so progress stays steady instead of snowballing.
| Layer | Currency | Spent on |
|---|---|---|
| 💡 Re-platform | Insights | Architecture (one-time picks) and the Tech Radar (levelled tracks) |
| 📈 Acquisition | Equity | The Board: automation, the R&D Lab's extra sources, multipliers |
| 👽 First Contact | Xenobytes | Xenotech: alien sources, alien data types, automation |
| 🌀 Big Bang | Axioms | Never spent: every Axiom boosts production and every prestige gain |
Each prestige needs three completed challenges of the layer below: runs with a restriction (no columns, no INSERT, sources ×100 cost), up to four tiers, a one-hour limit, and a bigger bonus for finishing faster. Big Bang milestones (at 1, 10, 20, 50, … 500) automate the game and make earlier layers permanent. At 50, Catalog Everything completes the game and starts New Game+, with production ×2 per completion.
Keyboard shortcuts
Space INSERT · 1–6 switch tabs · B buy amount · M mute · F full screen.
Tips
- Check the inbox: vendor emails often hint at what unlocks next.
- Leave the tab open. The game is built to be left running, and works offline.
- Achievements (250+) each give +1% production, so grab the cheap ones early.
- Pick a number notation under Settings; there are ten, from "Finance deck" to Roman numerals.
FAQ
What is Rows to Riches?
A free browser idle (incremental) game about data engineering. You click INSERT to add rows, buy data sources that add rows for you, and prestige through four layers, from a CSV on localhost to cataloging the universe.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The game saves in your browser and installs as an app. Sources keep producing while it is closed, at half speed for up to 2 hours (more with the Bigger Disks tech).
How long does it take to finish?
A simulated optimal player reaches the first acquisition after about 9 hours, First Contact after about 85, the first Big Bang after about 112 and Catalog Everything after about 350. Real players take longer: the game is meant to be left running.
Is there an account or a password?
No. Progress is saved locally. For optional cloud saves you create an account code (R2R-XXXX-…) and enter it on another device. There is no email and no password.
Does it cost anything?
No. It is free, has no ads and nothing to buy.
Can I move my save to another device?
Yes: use the cloud save with an account code, or Export and Import under Settings → Save.
